National Triumph for Pegasus
The British Set Work Championships held in Newcastle on 2nd & 3rd May saw nine Pegasus gymnasts representing the South East, places won at the Regional event earlier in the year. New routines, levels starting at 1 and progressing with age up to 6 and a team event re-introduced at elite level created challenges for all qualifiers.
Competing at a National event for the first time were Gareth Thomas and Harrison Rowe working in the Level 1 team. Harrison put in steady work all round but an excellent effort by Gareth, who finished top of the team helped win the Team silver medal, individual 6th place and an invitation to a national training camp. Level 2 saw the South East in gold medal position with 2 Pegasus gymnasts in the top 6! James Lamb with 64.00 including a 9.7 on rings finished in 4th position whilst club mate Joseph McMorrow with 9.7 on Pommel, Rings and Vault finished with a total 65.60 to take individual silver just 0.15 short of the gold medal.
The Level 5 team lost a key member to injury prior to the event so were left with no margin for error as every score had to count. Never the less there were few errors, with clean performances from Adam Deans and more positive, much improved work from James Owen. A delighted team climbed the rostrum in 2nd position behind the East region.
In the elite level 6 team were Courtney Tulloch and James Hall. The South East went looking for Gold but the East, home of Britain's Olympic medal winning gymnast Louis Smith is formidable at all levels. Starting on High Bar for a one mark lead the South East edged ahead, a lead they gradually extended as the competition unfolded. A valiant fight back by the East on the final apparatus clawed back some of the deficit but the lead was too great. The South East finished with a magnificent score of 189.15 almost 5 marks ahead of the East. Consistent quality performances by both boys delivered for the team and resulted in Courtney finishing 2nd and James 8th in the individual rankings.
