Secondary schools rise to gymnastics challenge

Dover Gym Club Schools Competition at The Folkestone Academy

A Floor & Vault teams’ competition organised by Dover Gymnastics Club attracted 135 students from 14 secondary schools across Kent.

The free-to-enter schools competition, run in partnership with The Folkestone Academy who hosted the event, took place on Monday 27 March 2017.

The competition was based on the English Gymnastics Key Step programme in which each student performs a floor routine using a variety of gymnastics skills, and they also have to go over a vault.

The gymnasts were judged by Jenny Taylor and Abbie Langley from Dover Gym Club, and Miss Young and Sports Leaders from The Folkestone Academy who are all qualified Key Step Gymnastics judges.

Schools entered teams of three or four students in years 7 to 10, with the best three scores counting towards the overall team score.

There were two levels of competition: Advanced – for those students who have previous experience of gymnastics competitions, either as members of a gym club or after school club; and Novice – for those with no previous gymnastics experience.

At Novice level, categories were broken down to year groups, 7,8.9 and 10 or joint 7/8, 8/9 or 9/10.

Canterbury Academy won the Advanced Trophy with a team score of 56.45. A team from Sir Roger Manwood’s School in Sandwich came second and received Silver medals, and The Harvey Grammar School in Folkestone came in third place and received Bronze medals.

The highest scoring team in the Novice category was the Year 8 team from Charles Dickens School in Broadstairs who took the trophy and Gold medals.

The other results were as follows:

Novice Team Year 7
The North School 54.0 GOLD
Sir Roger Manwoods 53.9 SILVER

Competition Organiser Jon Green from Dover Gymnastics Club said: ‘There was a phenomenal amount of interest shown in this competition, which is the first major gymnastics event of its kind for secondary schools in Kent.

‘The standard of gymnastics was good and each pupil at each level worked hard to get the best possible score.

‘We managed to run this as a free-to-enter competition for schools thanks to The Folkestone Academy who kindly hosted the event and a donation from the Kent Police Property Fund to pay for medals, trophies and insurance and a judging course for the Sports Leaders from the Academy.

‘It is clear there is a strong demand for competition opportunities from secondary schools and I would like to see this become an annual event perhaps as part of the Kent School Games’.
